Abismos

"Common sense tells us that our existence is nothing but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness."
Vladimir Nabokov

Abismos is a multichannel, quadraphonic performance created for Festival Ruido. This piece delves into the profound interaction between darkness, space, and sound, exploring how these elements shape the human experience.

Throughout history, humanity has used darkness to heighten the senses and deepen our understanding of time and space. In contemporary immersive experiences, however, the primal feeling of “entering the darkness of a space” is often forgotten. This performance was designed as a fleeting interpretation of that void—a sonic ritual preserved only in the memory of those who witnessed it in the Salón de Honor of the Kirchner Cultural Center (CCK).

Performing in a historical venue like the CCK presents unique acoustic challenges. To translate the concept of “The Abyss” into sound, I developed a specific live-routing protocol:

  • Format: Discrete Quadraphonic (4.0).

  • Spatial Strategy: Using the 4-point system to blur the boundaries of the room, creating a physical sense of descent and transition.

  • The Goal: To demonstrate that spatial stability and immersive impact can be achieved in real-time environments through precise signal routing and psychoacoustic principles.
